Apart from publishing a quarterly research journal “Nāṭyam”
the Departmental Nāṭya-parishad
has been actively engaged in staging Sanskrit plays or plays related to Indian
culture based on Sanskrit literature for last 31 years since 1973.

The Parishad has so far produced and staged about 50 dramas at state as well
as national level begging many prizes.

During 2005-06, the Parishad staged the Sanskrit drama “Vikramorvaśīyam’
at the invitation of Kalidasa Academy of Ujjain in the National Sanskrit Drama
Festival organised by them at Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal. The Play was again
presented on the inaugural day of National Seminar on Sanskrit Drama and Folk
Theaters on 2nd of January 2006 at Rajamata Sindhia Golden Jubilee Hall of the
University.

VANAMALA BHAVALKAR SMṚTI

Smt. Dr. Vanmala Bhavalkar
was the first teacher of the department.
-
She not only contributed to
creative writings in Sanskrit through her oroginal plays, she directed and
produced a number of plays in Sanskrit under the auspices of the
department. In memory of her contribution, it has been planned to organize
a Sanskrit drama festival each year.

A two day drama festival in
her memory was organized 2nd and 3rd January 2006.

Kalidasa’s play
“Vikramorvaśīyam’ was presented by Nāṭya
Parishad of the department on the first day and on the next day three
plays along with Mrs. Bhavalakar’s play Baisakhi (Hindi Translation
of her Sanskrit play) was staged. The Festival was held in at Rajamata
Sindhia Golden Jubilee Hall of the University
